The Library After Dark

History

A Journal of the Plague Year

by Daniel Defoe

The Great Plague of London in 1665, told by a saddler who stayed in the city, reading the weekly bills of mortality and watching houses shut up with red crosses on their doors. Defoe was a small child at the time and wrote it in 1722. It reads like the account of a witness, which is the art of it.
