Marmion

by Walter Scott

Walter Scott’s tale in verse of an English lord on the road to the battle of Flodden came out in 1808 and sold in its thousands. In Persuasion Anne Elliot and the grieving Captain Benwick talk over Marmion and The Lady of the Lake, and she advises him to read more prose. When Scott turned to novels, Austen wrote that he had no business to write them, especially good ones.
