Ballads of a Cheechako

by Robert W. Service

A cheechako, in the Chinook Jargon of the North-West, is a newcomer, a tenderfoot, and this is Robert Service’s second book of Yukon ballads, of 1909. Service was born in Preston, grew up partly in Ayrshire with his grandfather, and was sent by his bank to Dawson City, which he reached after the gold rush was over. The ballads are of prospectors, gamblers and newcomers who came North to find gold.
