The Lady of the Lake

by Walter Scott

A Scottish exile falls for a woman defending an island stronghold, and the resulting narrative poem does more to romanticise the Highlands than nearly any other single work of its era. Scott wrote it in verse before he ever attempted the historical novels that made him famous. Tourists still visit the actual lake because of what he wrote about it here.
