The History of the Devil

by Daniel Defoe

Defoe’s history of the Devil from his fall to the eighteenth century, published in 1726, half serious and half satire. It is told in the plain, busy voice of the author of Robinson Crusoe, with a great deal of opinion. Maggie Tulliver, aged nine, shows Mr Riley its picture of a witch being ducked, and he thinks it “not quite the right book for a little girl.”
