In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae

John McCrae, a doctor from Guelph, Ontario, wrote In Flanders Fields at Ypres in May 1915, the day after he buried his friend Alexis Helmer, and Punch printed it that December. It is why the poppy became the flower of remembrance. McCrae died of pneumonia at Wimereux in January 1918, and this book of his poems came out the next year with an essay on him by his friend Andrew Macphail.
