The Library After Dark

History

Old New Zealand

by F. E. Maning

F. E. Maning came to the Hokianga in 1833, married into a Māori family and lived as a Pākehā Māori, a European who had made his life in the Māori world. This book, published in 1863 under the name “A Pakeha Maori”, looks back on those early days with humour and some exaggeration. It is a teller’s book rather than a historian’s, and a classic.
