The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano

by Olaudah Equiano

Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography, published in London in 1789, tells of being taken from Igboland as a child, of slavery in the Americas and at sea, and of buying his own freedom. It became a bestseller and one of the key books of the campaign against the slave trade. Some historians have questioned where he was born; no one has questioned the force of the book.
