The City of the Sun

by Tommaso Campanella

A Genoese sea captain tells a Knight Hospitaller of a city on an island beyond the Indian Ocean, built in seven rings, where everything is held in common and the walls are painted with all the knowledge of the world. Campanella, a Dominican friar, wrote it in 1602 in a prison in Naples, where he spent twenty-seven years. It is a utopia by a man who had every reason to want one.
