The Library After Dark

Novel

The Golden Dog

by William Kirby

William Kirby, who left England at fifteen and settled at Niagara, set this romance in Quebec in 1748, in the last years of New France, when the Intendant Bigot and his friends were robbing the colony. Its title is the carved and gilded dog gnawing a bone, over a verse promising revenge, that still looks down from a wall in the old city. Published in 1877, it was for a long time the best-known Canadian novel, in English and in French.
