Novel

The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane

by Alain-René Le Sage

Gil Blas sets out for the university at Salamanca, is taken by robbers on the road, and from then on lives by his wits as a valet, a doctor’s assistant, a secretary and a courtier across Spain. Le Sage published it in parts between 1715 and 1735; Smollett translated it, and named it as his model for Roderick Random. This is the first of three volumes.
