Tartarin on the Alps

by Alphonse Daudet

Tartarin of Tarascon, the boastful hero of Daudet’s comic novel of 1872, sets out in this sequel of 1885 to climb the Jungfrau and Mont Blanc, so as to keep his place as president of his town’s Alpine Club. On the way his old friend Bompard assures him that Switzerland is run by a company, that its crevasses are kept safe for visitors and that nothing on a mountain can really hurt him. Tartarin believes him, which makes him braver than any climber in the Alps, for a while.
