Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 1, July 17, 1841

by Various

The first volume of Punch, the London comic weekly founded in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells. It gave the word “cartoon” its modern meaning, printed Thackeray, and kept going for a century and a half. Early Punch is rowdier and more radical than its later reputation.
