Siddhartha

by Hermann Hesse

A young man who has been given every spiritual answer decides he must instead go and get every answer wrong himself. He becomes an ascetic, then a merchant, then a ferryman, discarding each self once it has taught him what it could. Hesse suggests wisdom cannot be handed down; it can only be arrived at, slowly, by the long way round.
