Philosophy

New Atlantis

by Francis Bacon

Sailors lost in the South Sea come upon Bensalem, an island unknown to the world, whose great institution, Salomon’s House, is a college for the study of nature. Bacon left it unfinished, and it was published in 1627, the year after his death. The founders of the Royal Society, thirty-three years later, took it as something like a plan.
