Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textA man born enslaved teaches himself to read against direct and considerable danger, correctly identifying literacy as the single thing his condition most depended on denying him. He wrote this account himself, naming names, at real personal risk. I do not have a wry line for this one; some books are simply owed a plain reading.
