My Bondage and My Freedom

by Frederick Douglass

The second and considerably more detailed account this man wrote of his own enslavement and escape, expanded once freedom had made the fuller truth safer to tell. He revises his own earlier telling openly, correcting what caution had once required him to soften. It is a rare thing, a man allowed to edit his own history in his own lifetime.
