Up from Slavery

by Booker T. Washington

A man born enslaved builds, from almost nothing, an entire institution dedicated to educating others out of the same circumstance he escaped. Washington argued for practical trades and patient self-improvement over confrontation, a strategy his contemporaries argued about fiercely even at the time. Whatever you make of the strategy, the sheer scale of what he actually built is not in dispute.
