The Harvester

by Gene Stratton-Porter

A boy raised alone in the wilderness by his mother becomes a herb gatherer with an uncanny knowledge of the woods, and eventually a fortune to match it. Stratton-Porter clearly believed a childhood spent paying close attention to the natural world was its own kind of education. The forest, once again, does at least half the character-building.
