The Library After Dark

Journey

The Backwoods of Canada

by Catharine Parr Traill

Catharine Parr Traill, Susanna Moodie’s sister, emigrated in the same year, 1832, and settled near her in the backwoods north of Peterborough. Her letters home, published in London in 1836, are as practical and cheerful as her sister’s book is rueful, full of advice on clearing, building and making maple sugar. She lived to be ninety-seven, and wrote books on Canada’s wild flowers.
