The Conjure Woman

by Charles W. Chesnutt

A collection of tales told by a formerly enslaved man to a Northern couple who have bought his old plantation, tales that read as folk charm on the surface and as sharp historical testimony underneath it. Chesnutt used the frame of a harmless old storyteller to smuggle in accounts his white audience would not have tolerated told plainly. The trick, once you notice it, changes every story that follows.
