Returning Voices

The Squatter and the Don

by María Amparo Ruiz de Burton

A Californio family near San Diego loses its land, cattle and patience to settlers who arrive with American law on their side, while a railway monopoly decides the town’s future. Ruiz de Burton published it in 1885 under the name C. Loyal. It is among the first novels written in English by a Mexican American.
