Clotelle; Or, The Colored Heroine

by William Wells Brown

A woman born enslaved and fathered by the very man who claims to own her is sold away from her own children, in a novel modeled closely on the author’s real family history. Brown was himself formerly enslaved, and wrote this as the first known novel published by an African American, though first in England rather than at home. Read it as testimony as much as fiction; for its author, the two were not easily separated.
