Returning Voices

American Indian Stories

by Zitkala-Sa

A Yankton Dakota girl leaves the reservation for a missionary school in Indiana and finds she can no longer go wholly home. Zitkála-Šá first published most of these pieces in the Atlantic Monthly and Harper’s around 1900. She gathered them into this book in 1921.
