Returning Voices

Minnie’s Sacrifice

by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper

Two young people raised as white learn that their mothers were enslaved, and choose to spend their lives teaching and working among the freed people of the South. Harper serialised it in the Christian Recorder in 1869. It lay in the newspaper’s files until it was published as a book in 1994.
