Returning Voices

Herland

by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Three men stumble into an isolated country populated entirely by women, who have built a stable, thriving civilisation with no men in it at all, and none of the disasters the explorers confidently predicted. Gilman used the premise mostly to interrogate, patiently and pointedly, every assumption the three visitors brought with them. It is utopian fiction with a very sharp, very polite edge.
