Poetry

Old Spookses’ Pass, Malcolm’s Katie, and Other Poems

by Isabella Valancy Crawford

Isabella Valancy Crawford was born in Dublin in 1850 and came to Canada as a child with her family, which was poor; she kept her widowed mother by writing for the Toronto papers. This book of 1884, the only one she published, was printed at her own expense and sold very few copies. Malcolm’s Katie, its long poem of love and the clearing of the forest, is now counted among the best Canadian poems of its century.
