Notes and Queries, Number 01, November 3, 1849

by Various

The first number of Notes and Queries, a weekly founded in 1849 so that readers could put obscure questions to one another and answer them. Its motto came from Captain Cuttle in Dickens’s Dombey and Son: “When found, make a note of.” It is still running, as a scholarly journal.
