Brook Farm

by John Thomas Codman

Memories of Brook Farm, the community George and Sophia Ripley founded at West Roxbury in 1841, by John Thomas Codman, who lived there as a young man. Its members shared the work so that everyone would have time to think, and Hawthorne was among the first of them. It lasted until 1847, after a fire destroyed its great new building.
