The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

by Agatha Christie

A retired detective is drawn out of retirement by a village murder, narrated by a doctor whose account turns out to be considerably less complete than the reader is led to assume. Christie broke a rule of the genre so thoroughly with this one that critics argued about its fairness for years afterward. I will say only that the trick is entirely legal, by the letter of the form’s own rules.
