The Library After Dark

Novel

The Sorrows of Young Werther

by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Letters from a young man who falls hopelessly in love with Lotte, who is engaged to someone else. Goethe published it in 1774, when he was twenty-four, and was famous across Europe almost at once. Young men took to dressing like Werther, in a blue coat and a yellow waistcoat.
