The Napoleon of Notting Hill

by G. K. Chesterton

In the London of 1984 the king is chosen by lot, and the lot falls on Auberon Quin, a joker who decrees that every borough shall have its walls, halberds and heralds. Only Adam Wayne, the young Provost of Notting Hill, takes it seriously, and goes to war over a street. It was Chesterton’s first novel, in 1904.
