The Library After Dark

Novel

The Imperialist

by Sara Jeannette Duncan

Elgin, Ontario, where young Lorne Murchison practises law and stands for Parliament for closer ties with Britain, is Brantford, where Sara Jeannette Duncan grew up. She published it in 1904, by then a journalist who had travelled round the world and married in India, where she lived for many years. It is a shrewd, funny portrait of a small Canadian town arguing about what the country is to be.
