Novel

Beautiful Joe

by Marshall Saunders

Marshall Saunders, a Baptist minister’s daughter from Nova Scotia, wrote this book for a competition held by the American Humane Education Society, and won it. The dog who tells the story was real: she met him at Meaford, Ontario, after he had been rescued from a master who cut off his ears and tail. It is said to have been the first Canadian book to sell a million copies.
