The Thousand and One Nights

by Edward William Lane

Edward William Lane lived for years in Cairo, dressed and spoke as a Cairene, and wrote An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians before he turned to the Nights. His translation came out in monthly parts from 1838, with woodcuts after William Harvey and notes that make a small encyclopaedia of Arab life. He left out whatever he thought indecent or tedious, which was a good deal.
