The Library After Dark

History

For the Term of His Natural Life

by Marcus Clarke

Rufus Dawes is transported to Van Diemen’s Land for a murder he did not commit, and the novel follows him through the penal settlements of Macquarie Harbour, Port Arthur and Norfolk Island. Marcus Clarke worked from the colonial records, and published it as a serial in Melbourne between 1870 and 1872. It is the great novel of the convict system, and a harrowing one.
