Les Misérables

by Victor Hugo

A man serves nineteen years for stealing bread, is shown one act of mercy he does not feel he deserves, and spends the rest of his life trying to earn it retroactively. An entire revolution happens mostly at the edges of his personal redemption. Hugo believed one good act, properly received, could restructure a soul; the book is his argument for that belief at enormous, patient length.
