The Garies and Their Friends

by Frank J. Webb

A free Black family builds a life and a business in a Northern city, only to discover the North’s promise of safety was never quite as complete as advertised. Webb wrote one of the very first novels by an African American author to reach print, and had to publish it in England to do so. Its very existence is as much the achievement as its plot.
