Modern Painters, Volume 4

by John Ruskin

The fourth volume of Ruskin’s Modern Painters, of 1856, is subtitled Of Mountain Beauty, and is about how mountains are made and how painters have seen them. It has chapters on crests, precipices and aiguilles, many of them drawn by Ruskin himself, and two chapters set against each other, The Mountain Gloom and The Mountain Glory. Ruskin first saw the Alps at fourteen, from a garden above Schaffhausen, and never forgot it.
