The Anatomy of Melancholy

by Robert Burton

Robert Burton, an Oxford scholar who signed himself Democritus Junior, set out to explain melancholy and ended by writing about nearly everything: love, diet, air, scholars, religion and the cures for sorrow. First published in 1621, it kept growing in every edition he lived to see. Samuel Johnson said it was the only book that ever took him out of bed two hours sooner than he wished to rise.
