The Brothers Karamazov

by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Three brothers and a father none of them can forgive, and a murder that could plausibly have been committed by any of the four. Dostoevsky uses the killing mostly as an excuse to make each brother argue his whole philosophy of God and guilt at length. It is enormous, and I have never met anyone who regretted finishing it.
