The Library After Dark

Conscience

The Secret Agent

by Joseph Conrad

Mr Verloc keeps a shabby shop in Soho, spies for a foreign embassy, and is ordered to blow up the Greenwich Observatory. Conrad drew on a real bombing of 1894 and told it in a voice of cold irony. It is the quietest and most devastating book on this shelf, and much of it is about the people nobody tells the secret to.
