The Library After Dark

Oratory

M. Fabi Quintiliani institutionis oratoriae liber decimus

by Quintilian

The tenth book of Quintilian’s training of the orator, and the one people actually read: a reading list of Greek and Latin literature, with a verdict on each author. It is where the idea of a literary canon begins. Quintilian taught rhetoric in Rome and was paid by the state to do it, the first professor to be so.
