The Library After Dark

History

C. Iuli Caesaris De Bello Gallico, I-IV

by Julius Caesar

Caesar’s own account of his conquest of Gaul, written in the third person as if by a neutral observer. It opens with the most famous first sentence in any Latin schoolbook: “Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres.” These first four books take him across the Rhine and, briefly, to Britain.
