Sonnets from the Portuguese

by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

A sequence of love sonnets the poet wrote for the man she would go on to marry, first published under a title meant to disguise them as mere translations. She let the disguise fall away only once the relationship had already proven itself lasting. They remain some of the most direct, unguarded declarations of love in this entire catalogue.
