The Library After Dark

Poetry

Poems, &c.

by Joanna Baillie

Joanna Baillie, a minister’s daughter from Lanarkshire, published these poems anonymously in 1790, with plain scenes of country life and some poems in Scots. Hardly anyone noticed them. She became famous later for her Plays on the Passions, and Walter Scott called her the best dramatist since Shakespeare.
