Wonder

The Second Jungle Book

by Rudyard Kipling

Kipling went back to the jungle in 1895 and finished Mowgli’s story: the White Cobra guarding a dead king’s treasure, the red dogs of the Deccan led into the wild bees’ rocks, and the spring when Mowgli grows up and leaves the wolves. Between them are tales from further afield, among them “The Miracle of Purun Bhagat”, about a prime minister who gives everything up to live as a holy man in the Himalaya. The second book is the sadder of the two, and some readers think the better.
