Prince Henry the Navigator

by C. Raymond Beazley

Henry of Portugal, a son of King John I, sent ship after ship down the coast of West Africa in the fifteenth century, though he seldom went to sea himself. Beazley’s life of him, published in 1895, is also an account of geography through the Middle Ages, from the pilgrims to the chartmakers. The famous school of navigators he is supposed to have kept at Sagres has since been doubted.
