The Library After Dark

Novel

The History of Emily Montague

by Frances Brooke

Frances Brooke went out to Quebec in 1763, where her husband was chaplain to the garrison, and wrote this novel in letters, published in London in 1769. Its letter-writers go sleighing, watch the great river freeze and argue about marriage, and Arabella Fermor, the liveliest of them, steals the book. It is often called the first novel written in North America.
