The Island of Doctor Moreau

by H. G. Wells

A shipwrecked man is stranded on an island where a doctor has been surgically reshaping animals into something disturbingly close to people. Wells uses the horror to ask exactly how thin the line between civilisation and cruelty actually is. The doctor is not the monster of the piece so much as its logical conclusion.
